Do you want to decorate your pumpkin?..I ask my five year old. She initially responds we can't it's too early they will get old..I say no let's just draw on them.. She says ok. I say what would you like to draw. She says a unicorn, but "can you draw one for me because I don't know how." I say of course I can help, so I make an outline of what I thought was a perfectly good unicorn.. she jumps in .. no not like that .. I say "that looks like a unicorn no..no...she says.. "you forgot the wings."

Somethings act like markers or lets say points on a timeline, pins on a map. Take a second look. Take a picture of a wall in your house and put it in a drawer for five years. In five years that picture might mean more or less. You might have a new wall to look at or might have misplaced the photo. I have had this photo stashed in a small box buried in the basement since 1994. I guess I should have looked after five years not 15.

They say the sun was just beginning to cut over the hill when the three cars collided. Witnesses say it was the worst accident they had ever seen. The local paper ran stories about it for a week but never mention the five people involved. I never saw the scene but like many I had a vivid picture of it running in my head like someone was holding a fisher price slide viewers up to my eyes. Speculation began to spread like wild fire thru school and town. Everyone was talking about the "crash" and about the rumor that someone survived the crash. I overheard a woman in the Sunny Mart say," I drove by that accident and I tell you no one could have survived... if someone did they had to make somekind of deal with..well with someone." Only a handful of people saw Christopher that morning, a few cops, myself and Mae's crew. Of all the people in the world why did it have to be Mae.

I study the flashing slides and hover over every detail until I feel a little ill. I see the twisted metal shine in the golden morning light. Everything is quiet and I think if I stay still enough I will be able to imagine where Christopher climbed from the wreckage. The wheels from the car are still slightly moving, there is the faintest trail of white smoke and a trickle of black oil running down the pavement...where is he... what car...I hear a faint sound in the distance that starts quietly and then erupts into the period bell. Math class in five minutes with Mr.Evans. I guess you'll have to wait Christopher like I have to ...

I have been watching the rooftops. Watching the smoke rise from the different chimneys the different pipes. On the coldest days the smoke is much denser and looks like small clouds of cotton stretched from a spool. On warmer days the smoke is transparent and looks like water rolling over the surface of the sky. Where 2 now? What to do today?

I woke up one weekend to find the house to myself. Everyone was away and I had the run of the house. Time to be productive I said..Time to be productive. Well, I did nothing except clean, watch something on the computer or t.v. I can't really remember and then I imagined how long it would take for me to clean every surface of the house with cotton balls. A day? A week? A month? A year. I realized that by the time I might come up with some arbitrary time for the cotton ball cleaning that there would be a fresh cover of dust on the kitchen floor I just finished and that one side would be cleaner than the other side but not really clean, just less dirty.

Christopher and I didn't get to speak a word before two cops drove up, handcuffed him and carted him away around the path to county rd d. I rubbed something between my thumb and finger as two detectives escorted me into the school. I noticed Mae with her small group was watching the show. Their eyes fixed on me just until I entered the side door when I know all their heads would be on pivots saying things, like oh my god, did you see Christopher.. Oh my did you see...honestly if I never saw Mae again honestly I would ...Anyway,

the cops set me down in the art room that had a large window overlooking the pond in the front of the school. One detective lowered the blinds as the other started in, "Ok look here, we are going to make this simple, I am sure your a little confu,.I cut in confused! Yes confused. What are you doing with Christopher? The cop is unamused.. Look! I ask the questions..you'll sit and answer or you'll follow him. FINE! I held my wrists together and pointed my palms toward his head. He seemed to look in my direction but his expression changed as he seemed to be interested in something other than my gesture. I turned my hands inward and saw what looked like a pink piece of bubble gum but was more..let's say spongy. He pulls out a walkie and called out,"Jim we're going to need you in here...Now!" He then sits back down and in a very even tone like he was trying to talk me off a ledge,"Look, let me tell you how this will be, Jim will come in here take what your holding in your hand and then I will ask the questions. He takes a small breath."Understand?" Inside I wanted to jump up and smack his condescending face but I just nodded stared down at my feet and wished Christopher would cast another shadow.

The Ford Mustang

Yesterday I saw a man sketching a picture of a Ford Mustang as he sat at a local McDonald's eating french fries and a large vanilla shake. What was especially interesting was the detail. It was a street scene that had everything rendered in a photo realistic quality down to the last leaf. The picture was about 50 inches wide and could barely fit on the table. As I held my one year old I asked him,"how are you doing that are you referring to a picture, it's looks perfect like a black and white photography--(i neglected to mention he was using a graphite pencil). Looking up from his work he brushed his silver hair from his eyes and said,"it's just how I remember it looking parked on our street when I was a kid."

Since, the announcement several stories have been buzzing around the school and for just a moment I decided to shut off and think about something else. I just wanted to be quiet so I cut gym to hide out and take a seat in our favorite spot. It was around 10 and the sun was beginning to warm my shoulders. I looked down and saw my black Carolina's had a thin coating of dust coverings them. The sun warmed patch of dried dirt and bleached grass was neglected by everyone except the burners, stencils, Christopher and I. Their wasn't enough space for the field hockey girls to run around smacking each others shins or the football boys to rattle their heads together so without the attention of the popular ones the grass went thirsty. For all it's apparent short comings the spot was perfectly hidden but had a great view of the track. Christopher and I called the spot the patch. I liked the patch. During Earth Science Christopher and I would hang out at the patch. He would smoke an American Spirit and I would solve all the worlds problems, or maybe just point them out. It always seemed easier and more entertaining to ridicule the other suckers that had to actually run around the track like groups of cattle while coach Shea would yell up into the air 5:55, 6, 6:05..Today I enjoyed Shea's cadence and began to drift away until a shadow crawled over my boots. I looked up to see Christopher. I jumped up and gave him a hug. Christopher seemed a little dazed and looked like he almost didn't know me. He seemed confused like a person sleepwalking or someone just waking up from a deep sleep. Then I saw the blood. Smears and blotches of blood were on his jacket cuffs and collar. He must have seen my reaction since his daze seemed to be replaced with a growing uneasiness. Christopher was just beginning to see the blood.

Mae didn't know what she was saying but everyone tended to listen to her. I watched from my locker as a small group gathered around her as she made up what she felt must have really happened. Drama. I guess some will use any situation to call attention to themselves. She must be speculating on who was in the car because the voice over the pa said "authorities still haven't notified parents" as for the reason we couldn't hear who was involved in the crash. Let her talk. I still haven't heard from Christopher. It's 9:20 am and I am suppose to be in gym. I am suppose to always be somewhere always every minute I am suppose to be occupied. Right now I just want go find him and sit down to a warm breakfast sandwich at the bagel nosh, with no time, class or Mae to irritate me.

When I first moved to MPLS...the first time I notice there were these head shots next to the articles throughout the Star Tribune. I cut them out and punched holes in the top of each picture. Then with a pair of scissors I cut aluminum cans to make what were essentially grommets to provide a little silver accent and strength to the pieces so they could hang on small finishing nails. After a bit I had covered a couple walls and an old storm windows with these little guys.

For years he would go to the corner of Marina and Venice blvd with his 2'x3' sheet of plywood and nails to make things. Most days he would just hammer nails into his plywood. Some days he would bring a big roll of twine in addition to his nails and plywood. On these days he would tie the twine to each nail and pull it tight until it could reach a parking meter post, bike rack stand or a parked handle of a car. One day I went over to him as he was hammering a nail and asked what he was doing. He looked up and said, "I am hammering a nail." I then asked if he had twine that day. He looked up again with a little smile and said,"sorry no, today is tape day."

The hallways were silent except for the sound of fumbling paper as someone prepared to address the school over the pa. I remember it was a Tuesday. Tuesday was the day that Christopher and I would get breakfast sandwiches in the cafeteria before our first period. I liked Tuesdays until this Tuesday. Where was I? Yes, the hallways were silent first period had started, well actually it was time for first period but everyone was just siting waiting to hear what had happened. Christopher hadn't showed up that morning, no text, no call. He must have been in the accident. The fumbling paper stopped and then a long pause. A long exhale seemed to freeze everything. I remember being in the hall but was looking in on my earth science class. Everyone was waiting. Where was Christopher?

"Something will have to make sense one of these days," Christopher said as he turned to walk down the hallway to second period calculus with Dr. Fleming. The sun and overhead fluorescent mixed to create an uneasy overall over lite environment. I remember being frustrated by not knowing what Christopher exactly meant. He could be referring to how the recent departure of our friend was not now but soon would "make sense" or he could be bitching about how ridiculous it is to be herded around hallways like Pavlov cattle reacting to a bell that says when your conversation was over and when you should be in another room down the hall that looks exactly like the last hall you had earth science in or typing with Ms. Wingate. I needed to be in gym, but honestly couldn't remember if today was to be dodgeball or run around the track until I got a side stitch. Something needs to change and something will make sense one of these days, but for now true to form Christopher made a blanket statement so most likely with the intention that later I couldn't call him out on said speculation. I just had to wait and play along until I could see all the cards on the table.

Around this time thirty years ago a boy woke up in his grandparents house in upstate new york. It was early. The sun just started to reveal the 14 inches of snow that fell over the night. The boy remember sneaking downstairs to the kitchen to where he knew the swiss miss hot chocolate with the marsh mellows was and started to heat a kettle of water on the stove. He waited by the pot to the first sign of the steam gaining just enough strength to set of the tea pots whistle. When the water was just the perfect temperature he grabbed the tea kettle a mug and three packets of swiss miss and sat at the kitchen table that faced a breakfast nook looking out of a bay window. Outside the new snow blanketed everything and bounced a soft light across the kitchen. The boy watched the marsh mellows slowly circle around the mug as the steam gentle rose into the air and for a moment the boy was at peace. For a moment the boy felt a quiet connection to his little world that made such an impression on him that he knew back then that morning would always be a memory he remembered.

There is a small window of time during the day where both the kids are resting and I have the run of the house. Most of the time I race to pick things up, clean up the random "art projects" and try to check an email or say hi to the dog until the "chaos" begins again. During these quiet times I have seen a thousand of these vignettes. These vignettes are beautiful reminders of the little lives resting upstairs.

At one point what was happening made sense. I walked into the store and noticed the floor had just been waxed. A bag of chips had fallen to the ground with a portion of it's contents trampled on and spread across the floor. I heard a rattling in the back of the store and decided I should take a look at what was making the sound. It seemed like the second I decided to check out the sound it stopped. At this point I wished I was happy with what I already knew. I wanted to go back and start over. I wanted so desperately to walk twenty steps backward and shut the door. I didn't need what I thought I first needed. I didn't know what I should be afraid of but deep down under my jacket my insides knew nothing would ever be the same.

Two years ago I was visiting the town where I grew up. It was over Halloween and we decided to go walking around my old block trick or treating with my two year old, my wife, my mom and sister. It was a typical Halloween evening. Vera, my daughter, was very shy and at each house needed to be told it was OK to approach the person with the candy. She stood as far as her arm could extend for candy and would quickly turn once she got the sweets. This happened at every house except the house where I grew up. Now, you might not believe this but when the owner opened the door at my old house Vera walked straight passed him into the living room and began looking around. Now I never told here I used to live in this house as far as she knew it was like any other of the houses we visited that night. I just can't explain what happen. So gave the owner a little smile and said she must know somehow I used to live here..and apologized and stepped into retrieve Vera. The owner just smiled waiting for my to grab my child. For the rest of the night Vera went back to her shy self staying far back from the house doors.

I saw this Starbucks cup on a Monday morning. It must have been dropped sometime after 7:30 in the morning on the previous Friday and before 7:30 on the following monday morning..so basically about three days is the longest this Starbucks cup could have been exposed to the elements. The shot of Mr. Styrofoam on the other hand was taken after two weeks of him hanging out on the corner of Lowry and Central.

One simple May morning about two years ago I met Drew Mint. We were on the 10 bus headed for downtown. There were about 15 people randomly seated throughout with Drew seated directly across from me in the back of the bus. Drew was one of the people that blend into crowds. The plain simple person that is always around but if you don't take the time to look you would most likely overlook him. I was listening to a podcast and trying to avoid eye contact with everyone but there was something particularly unsettling about this man seated across from me. I think it was that this man wasn't avoiding eye contact but looking directly at me. Not knowing the proper way to handle the situation I took off my headphones and said, I am sorry did you say something...knowing that he didn't say a word but the alternative was to say something like can I help you which ..I didn't so I just said ," did you say something?" and without a moments hesitation Drew gave a little smile and said Hi, I am Drew Mint, no relation to J.D. Mint from the Arkansas Travelers. I again didn't know what to say but, oh .. "hi".. Then with another little smile he said you know after today I will never see you again. What do you say to that? So, I asked if he was going anywhere? Without a word Drew pulled the cord to get off at the next stop. I watched him walk off the bus and cross the street to the other side of Lowry. I watched him walk down 18th street as long as I could before the bus pulled away. That was the last time I saw Drew Mint.

Go to the New Jersey shore. Walk to the furthest point of the shore where the ocean and bayside connect. Sit down and watch the two bodies of water merge and float out into the distance. Wait for the sun to go down before you start following the sand back to the beach house.

Extra Dry Gin

Five days a week I wait on the corner of Lowry and Central to take the bus downtown to my place of work. While I wait I usually take two to ten pictures of the ground. A Simple enough idea just like another project I started when I lived in LA which was to take a 4x5 film shot of the inside of my refrigerator for one year...The hope was that after one year I would have a huge show filled with 365 11x14 prints of my fridge. I did it for a week and lost interest. So far I have been taking pictures of Lowery and Central since May 2, 2008. Unlike the fridge idea, this series of photos continues to inspire.

I used my father's 35mm Mamiya/Sekor to make this image. When I intially started thinking about the shot I intended on making an image in camera that looked like it had been worked in Photoshop. With a b/w xerox machine and a window I was able to walk the line between what is real and what is manipulated.
